Cleaning Bathroom Floor Tiles

Of all the rooms in my house, I find the bathrooms the least appealing to clean.

They taunt me with their white surfaces that show every last bit of hair and dirt that clings to everything.

Isn’t it true that you can never truly keep a bathroom 100 percent clean? But who likes a dirty bathroom?

We have a love-hate relationship with bathrooms; they’re the first place to clean, but the last place we want to start cleaning. Breaking down the cleaning into chunks makes this more manageable.

In the case of bathrooms, some people think the bathroom isn't clean unless they smell the strong odor of a cleaning product.

There are however natural cleaning solutions that work to clean and sanitize without all the chemicals but still leave you with a fresh scent.

Vacuuming:

Vacuum the bathroom floor with your vacuum cleaner to pick up all the hair and dust bunnies that are scattered about. If you don’t, your floor will be a nightmare to clean with a mop or sponge.

Clean Dirty Grout Buildup:

My bathrooms have light grouting on the tiles, so I use an anti-bacterial spray with a sponge to clean away any unsightly dirt build up while killing all the germs.

You can also use bleach on light colored grout in a spray bottle, or if you prefer a combination in equal parts salt, baking soda, and vinegar.

Mopping:

Mopping the floor really does make all the difference. Work from the back of the room towards the door.

Dunk your mop in a fresh mixture of warm water and floor tile cleaner of your choice, don't forget to wring out the mop.

Run over the tiles a few times, and don’t ignore the hard to reach areas. If they’re hard to reach, they’re also the most dirty. Repeat as necessary.

If your mop does not fit behind something – go in with sponges blazing.

If you don't want to use a commercial tile cleaner, substitute it with fresh or concentrated lemon juice for a fresh and clean bathroom. It's always a good idea to test in an out of the way spot first to make sure it won't damage the floor.

It is more sanitary to use a mop where you can wash or replace the mophead as needed.

Keep Those Tiles Clean:

Following are a few tips to help keep your bathroom floors clean and sanitized.

  • Keep your bathroom floor dry especially after bathing or showering.
  • Always keep a window open to prevent mold from growing. If you don't have a bathroom window, make sure the fan is on while showering.
  • Mopping weekly will keep things from getting unsightly and bacteria free.

Like it or not, this is the room of your house that deserves the most attention.

While my love-hate relationship with my bathrooms rages on, at least I know I’m winning the battle with the right tools and cleaning equipment. Stay strong and keep the bathroom smelling delicious.
