How To Clean The Shower

Dirty showers drive me crazy.

How is a person supposed to get clean if they are standing in a dirty space? To get clean it is necessary to shower in a dirt-free area. I have an absolute routine that I follow when cleaning the stall.

Clear Out The Clutter

I recommend removing everything from the area before you begin cleaning. This includes all shampoo and conditioner bottles, soap bars, shavers and anything else you store there.

While you are doing this, be sure to put any empty bottles into the recycling bin. Less mess is more effective when it comes to cleaning!

Spray It Down

Turn the shower on to rinse any loose dirt or hair down the drain. This is the perfect time to be sure that the drain is flowing properly. If it seems to be draining slower than it should, make a note to pick up some drain cleaner next time you are shopping.

Use a paper towel to remove anything that accumulated near the drain.

Homemade Shower Cleaner

I know that there are tons of cleaners available. I am very happy with my own homemade concoction. It is inexpensive to make and works on everything in the shower area. Believe me, if you try it once you will never go back to commercial shower products. This solution will kill mildew and leave your shower sparkling clean. NOTE- DO NOT ADD BLEACH TO THIS RECIPE. AMMONIA AND CHLORINE BLEACH, WHEN MIXED PRODUCE A DEADLY GAS.

Get a one gallon bucket, fill it with hot water and add the following:

  • One cup of vinegar
  • One cup of ammonia
  • One half cup of baking soda

Scrub That Tub

Using your freshly made cleaning solvent, start scrubbing. Soak down any areas that show signs of mold or mildew.

Let the solution set for a few minutes in those hard to clean spaces especially the corners. Grab your sponge and using a circular motion, wash the entire shower area. The dirt should come off rather easily with this mixture. Dry the tiles.

Shine The Chrome

Don’t forget to clean the faucet and handles. Wiping them down and then drying them with a cloth will make them shine like brand new. Use a stiff toothbrush to get into the small places, if needed.

Clean The Drain

Close the drain and pour the remaining contents of the solution into the tub. Let it soak for a while before scrubbing and draining. This will loosen any soap scum in it. Remember to dry it when you are finished.

Dirty Showerheads

Everybody cleans the exterior of the showerhead but the water actually comes from inside. Minerals naturally present in water and other sediment can build up in there and block the holes. If you have hard water, it is wise to remove the showerhead for a thorough cleaning about once a month.

  1. Close the drain in the sink
  2. Fill the sink with straight white vinegar
  3. Put the head in and let it soak for an hour
  4. Drain the vinegar and rinse the showerhead with cool water
  5. Reinstall the shower head

You now have a sparkling, clean shower. Since you have taken the time to clean the showerhead as well, you should have a more enjoyable shower!
