How To Organize Your Space

Are you running out of space? Is the home cluttered and filled with items in every nook and cranny. Can you find the things you are looking for, or do you have to ransack the house? Organizing doesn’t mean putting everything into the junk drawer, closet or the cabinet. You need help in organizing your space.

Planning / Categorizing

To start you need to make a decision. Are you concerned about maximizing your space? Do you want to display or conceal your belongings? You have to know what the goal is, the items to be organized, and they way you will ultimately have your items stored. Once you make up your mind start organizing accordingly.

Initiate your plan by sorting your things and organize by category. For instance place all your accessories and related items in one area, personal grooming items in another. Knickknacks in one area. Items to be donated to charity at another.

Reduce, Minimize and Eliminate:

Now is the time to evaluate your possessions harshly.

Extra "stuff" is clutter and makes the job just that much harder. If the clothing is faded, buttons are missing, or it's in a repair pile (and has been for many months) It's time to donate the item to charity.

Location and Accessibility

After all items are categorized appropriately, you need to focus on putting the item away in its proper spot. Consider it's use first before determine the final location. Have a good reason for storing an item at a certain place. If you save 15 seconds by not placing the items back to their proper place you will be awarded with 15 frustrating minutes searching for it later. The key to being organized is to keep the things in their proper place.

Access to your belongings shouldn’t comprise much strain and effort. So the things that are used daily should be at a place that makes them easily accessible. The things that you use seasonally or once in a year should be placed in high cabinets or at the back of the closet.

Assigning a place appropriate for it's use is the most essential part of organization. There are some factors to consider such as the object’s size, whether or not it is fragile, and the weight that should also be considered

Do not put heavy or breakable items on a high shelf. It may lead to damage when you need to retrieve it . Make the best use of any deep desk drawers, cabinets and shallow shelves for these items.

Keeping On Top Of Clutter

Placing a label of the contents of your storage bins will help you locate your belonging in the future, saving you time when you need the items.

You are not totally done once your organizing of your room or space is complete. If you are not diligent, as your belongings increase and the clutter will become disorganized, and chaos will sneak up on you if you are not careful. It helps if you set one firm rule. Never fill your drawers and cabinets to its fullest capacity. Leave a bit of space, and then clean and organize the drawer or cabinet before it becomes full again. Small tasks done each day can accomplish a lot to ensure the job does not get out of hand.

Keeping your space organized give you a greater ability to function efficiently, with a less stressful environment. Consider organizing a process that is ongoing, rather than an event, so it does not have a change to get out of hand again.
