Tips for Getting Organized

An organized home is a healthy home. If you can find what you're looking for, your blood pressure is stable and you are calm, the home is uncluttered so things can be easily gotten to and cleaned.

Organizing doesn't have to be stressful nor does it have to cost you alot of money. As a matter of fact, whatever expense you do spend to get organized you could make it all back or some of it back by selling the items you don't need anymore.

Mrs Clean is here to share her best tips and tricks for getting organized.

Have a Plan, Make a List and Take Your Time:

Decide what room or area you're going to organize first. What is it exactly that needs organizing? The closets, the garage, the car, the shed, the family room, etc.

Take your time and look around to get those creative juices flowing. What will it take to get you organized? Shelving, baskets, containers? Write down what you need to do and what you will need to purchase for each area.

How Long Will it Take and What You Need:

So you don't go into this feeling completely overwhelmed, think about how long a task will likely take you to finish and whether it is best done on a weekday or a weekend.

For example, the junk in the trunk of your car might take 15 minutes to clean it out. Then another 20 minutes to go through it all and decide what is garbage, what goes back in the trunk, and what you don't need that you might be able to sell or give away. Then another 10 - 15 minutes to put the things back in the trunk that you need.

If the car was part of the plan then maybe you purchased containers to put items in to keep the trunk better organized.

If organizing the garage is part of the plan and it's a mess that needs more time, this might be something you want to tackle on a weekend.

If you work better knowing the amount of time you'll need to devote to a task, give each area a time frame and don't forget to include extra time for unexpected interruptions such as phone calls and neighbors stopping by to say hello. Don't get yourself off track though, stick to your guns and get it done.

An important tip is to make sure you have all the tools and supplies ready before you start. If you'll be working on the garage have any containers, shelving supplies, cleaning products, garbage bags, hooks and hangers ready. This way you won't need to stop for trips to the store that could end up getting you side tracked.

You Don't Have to do This Alone:

In most families it's Mom that cleans, get's things going and ready for the day - or night, and plans and schedules a big cleaning day.

So it's no surprise you're reading this and planning the big organizing day. You don't have to do this by yourself, get your husband involved with chores that are best suited for him, like hanging hooks and shelves and taking out the trash.

The kids can also help, give them areas to work on that work for their height. Maybe they can sweep the garage floor or organize their outside toys on a lower shelf, separating the good toys from the broken toys.

Organization Tools:

If you don't have much space, or you have a large amount of things that you need to go through, there are several tools available to help you get organized. From shelves for kids toys, storage compartments and drawers for jewelry or other small items.
